Injection Molding

A process where an extrusion unit is used to melt a plastic to prepare it for further processing. In injection molding, the extrusion screw moves axially within the extrusion barrel allowing the screw to be used as a plunger. The extruder first conveys the molten plastic to the front of the extrusion screw. The screw then moves forward in the extrusion barrel, forcing the molten plastic into a closed mold. Using a large amount of pressure, the mold cavity is filled completely with molten plastic. The mold is cooled allowing the plastic to solidify, forming the injection molded part. This process is used for all types of plastics.
